Human Factors Assessment and Integration in Design
We carried out a high level Human Factors Analysis for a Compressor Station control room and panel design.
The analysis was used to inform the development of the design specification, highlighting a set of Human Factors issues that would, as a minimum, need to be addressed by the design contractor.
The analysis consisted of observations and walkthroughs and highlighted the following areas of Human Factors to be addressed during the design process:
The above issues were identified as important, as the analysis indicated that they had the potential to affect a set of cognitive tasks that underpin operator activity, namely:
Understanding the current condition of the relevant plant;
Recognising changes in conditions;
Diagnosing conditions and identifying faults;
Determining correct course of action based on this analysis and understanding such action;
Identifying success of the action and determining what other action is required.
The report provided to National Grid also provides checklists to help the design team consider these Human Factors issues as well as High-level guidance to help the design team integrate Human Factors into the design process.
