Understanding key behavioural drivers within the Marine Industry
The methodology applied during the project included analysing accident and incident data from maritime and other safety critical industries, a review of literature on safety management mechanisms and interviews with a number of stakeholders and shipping companies.
Findings from this work were used to develop models for influencing behaviour and improving safety across three sectors – cargo, oil and passenger. The models highlighted the key stakeholders within each sector, their span of influence, interactions between stakeholders and the key safety influencers within the different industry sectors investigated. Recommendations for both shipping companies and industry stakeholders were provided, aimed at addressing how organisations and industry stakeholders could positively influence safety management and safety performance by promoting some of the key enablers identified during this research, such as selection and assessment, career management, safety leadership, competence management and retention.
