Having begun her career as a Human Factors research assistant at the Rail Safety and Standards Board, Vicky has continued her interest in applying human factors in the rail industry and with Greenstreet Berman she continues to work in this area for a number of clients.

The conference was attended by a wide range of rail professionals from 5 continents. There were a number of presentations, workshops and discussions and these explored a wide range of human factors topics with a focus on topical issues. Key topics included interoperability of traffic management systems particularly with the introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), non-technical skills, safety culture, change management, the platform-train interface (PTI) and the development of new technology such as predictive maintenance.

The conference included technical visits, and Vicky attended the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to learn how the RAIB integrates human factors into investigations and reporting on incidents and the wide range of human factor elements that are investigated.

The conference was jointly organised by RSSB, Network Rail and the University of Nottingham, and in association with the European Railway Agency (ERA), the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (IEHF).
