Research into the costs and benefits of return to work and vocational rehabilitation in the UK

Greenstreet Berman drew together evidence from UK and overseas research in order to evaluate the costs, benefits and effectiveness of ‘return to work’ activities, i.e. return to work interviews, reduced hours and light duties, and vocational ‘rehabilitation’ activities, such as assistance from health professionals to reintegrate back into employment.

A number of case studies were developed around schemes operating successfully in the UK and opportunities for expanding vocational rehabilitation in the UK were identified. The study provided an evidence base for the potential for ‘return to work’ and ‘rehabilitation’ to reduce or contain UK employers’ liability costs and the incentives required to encourage the necessary changes in working practices.
