Investigating ‘experience erosion’ in the railway industry…
…and its impact on safety and identifying and developing best practice techniques for counteracting it.
‘Experience erosion’ is the decay of knowledge and skills relating to current techniques, equipment, legislation, safety standards and norms. The factors contributing to experience erosion may have far-reaching effects. Evidence from other industries shows the different ways in which experience can be eroded and that its adverse impact on safety is often a delayed effect.
This research investigated how experience erosion occurs, indicated how it impacts on safety and proposed practical solutions for counteracting it, to help the industry slow and reverse experience erosion trends.
